Artist Feature – Scotlyn of Solitude Ceramics

Artist Feature – Scotlyn of Solitude Ceramics

This week with sat down with Scotlyn of Solitude Ceramics a talented small maker in the LA area. Scotlyn has quickly become one of our favorite ceramicists  and we think she’ll be yours too! So, get to know Scotlyn, her brand and what inspires her most through our latest interview below:

Tell us a little bit about your vision and what you offer:
I create pottery, mainly functional wares, the pottery I create is all handmade by myself. Solitude Ceramics was formed just over a year ago after eight long years of refining my skill set on the potter's wheel. In those eight years I have found passion, frustration, pain, and the joys of achievement within each ball of clay I have slapped down. I formed Solitude to share my creative process and outcomes, as well as my passion for clay and everyday objects.

What is the most important thing you want others to know about you and your brand?
I often get asked "Did you make all this yourself?" I create every single piece from start to finish. I am a one gal small business. Each cup, planter, plate or mug I created from a ball of clay and transformed it into something new.

What inspires you the most when creating?
Mother Earth!

Where is Solitude Ceramics headed next?
Expanding my online shop is my big task at hand. I am not the most tech savvy gal, so this task is a big hurdle. I also am doing lots of Southern California pop ups throughout the fall all over so be sure to follow along on instagram from updates. I vend alongside so many fantastic people/small business with such a variety of goods. As far as the product I am really excited to dive into making a full dinner set again. They can be very challenging to make a full set identical, but unbelievably rewarding when it is finished or have a 18 pc set. Oh and BIG planters!

What piece of advice would you give those just starting out in your field?
Just keep practicing pottery. It is not the easiest skill to obtain but with time and dedication you will grow in strides. Also be creative, look inward not outward. Our modernized world full of imagery can influence so many artists deeply, but it is essential for the artist to continuously look inward for influence as well.

Name one song or band that embodies your brand:
I am not too sure if I have just one, but a few. I decided on Solitude Ceramics while looking for an S word to mirror my name, Scotlyn, and after a long list and loads of help from my partner I solidified Solitude. After this choice I discovered a few songs I really enjoy are titled or lyrics involved Solitude:

"Solitude" Black Sabbath

"Solitude" Billie Holiday

"Nothing" Townes Van Zandt
