Artist Feature – Beth Bowman of Bowman Ceramics

We sat down with one of Long Beach's very own small makers/ceramists Beth Bowman.
Tell us a little bit about your vision and what you offer:
I make functional pottery to be used every day. From mugs to plates and bowls, or vases for flowers. I love making thrown pieces to be enjoyed often.
What is your background and how did it lead you into ceramics?
My background is in floral design. My career began 20 years ago and taught me the joy of making beautiful things with my hands.
In the off-seasons from weddings and events, I have been able to get to the potter's wheel and continue to make and create with my hands. In the last year, I have switched from full-time florist to full-time potter.
What inspires you the most when creating?
The functionality of the pieces is most inspiring to me. I want to choose a silhouette that feels classic and timeless. I love finding the shape or glaze that works for every day use. It’s a moment to enjoy the piece while having a cup of coffee or plating a meal.
What time of day are you most inspired?
I absolutely love early mornings. The world feels still and new. It’s a time I always start slowly and plan the day ahead.
Describe your process when creating:
I always have a plan for what I’m making when I sit down at the wheel. Whether I’m making large pots for plants, or a dozen mugs, I will grab the right amount of clay for the piece. I love engaging muscle memory when I’m in production mode. From centering the clay to pulling and contouring the shape, there’s a rhythm and flow to the process that is so fun to get into.
Name one song or band that embodies your brand:
Fire for you by Cannons comes to mind. The final steps to any piece of pottery are always found in the kiln firing.
